What's killing Hollywood (not piracy!) ?
Jul. 16th, 2005 11:59 amOver here there's an article asking (and trying to answer) the above question.
I have a different answer. Let's take a look at my viewing options, shall we? Here's what's available at the local 'Plex:
The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3D - I think the title says it all. Not interested.
Batman Begins - a rehash (oh sorry "re-imagining") of the origins of a 1940's noir comic book. Well done, but not going to see it in theaters more than once. Will buy DVD.
Bewitched - a rehash (yes dammit, it's a rehash!) of a 1960's era sitcom. Not interested.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - a remake (kinda like a rehash) of a early 1970's movie. Idle curiosity, might go see it of I'm bored and have money to go before it leaves the cinema.
Dark Water - a rehash (noticing a trend yet?) of a 2002 japanese horror film (aka Honogurai mizu no soko kara). Have heard nothing good about this one. Might rent DVD just 'cause I like bad horror films (The Prowler, anyone?)
Fantastic Four - Yep, you guessed it, another rehash, this time of a '50's comic book. Again, well done I thought but not going to see it again in theaters, will buy DVD.
George A. Romero's Land of the Dead - the 4th in a series (is that like a rehash?) of a wonderful zombie movie. Will go see this weekend. Gotta go by myself, since no one nearby likes horror movies.
The Honeymooners - a rehash (Getting bored of the pattern?) of a '50's sitcom. Not interested. Will wait for cable.
The Longest Yard - a remake (Yep, bored now) of a '70's film. Not interested. Will wait for cable.
Madagascar - If the theater wouldn't be filled with screaming kids.... maybe. Will wait for cable.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith - big action flick. No pull for me to see on a theater screen. Just not interested.
Rebound - Martin Lawrence (don't like him) comedy about basketball (don't like it either)
Rize - a documentary (real one, not like Moore's propagandist crap) about krumping. Not interested. Sounds like Electric Boogaloo to me.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - 6th film of a very popular series. Good film, saw it twice. Will now wait for DVD.
War of the Worlds - a remake of a movie rehash of a radio reimagining of a great science fiction story. I don't care who made it or starred in it, it won't change the fact that I'm not gonna plunk down $8-10 to see a film I've seen/heard/read and can practically recite.
Wedding Crashers - Comedy about social deviants that learn to face reality. Will wait for cable.
So, there you go. You make your decision about what's killing hollywood. Watch Project Greenlight to find out more. Movies aren't about business, contrary to what the studio heads think. Make good stories, well acted with decent production values and people will go see it. But it has to be something we haven't seen before.
Edit(Sunday, July 17 17:24): Went to see Land of the Dead this morning. Good movie, had the theater to myself.
